"Shockingly Better™" Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

The Health Education Network (HEN) holds two regularly scheduled ACLS/BLS classes every month, one on a Saturday and the other on a Wednesday. They are held at the Denver Athletic Club, located in the heart of downtown Denver. Parking costs $5 for the entire day. All classes are done in accordance with the new American Heart Association (AHA) format. The classes are taught by healthcare professionals in a very proactive, intimate and relaxed environment. Students leave class with their American Heart Association ACLS card, good for two years.

Class Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in basic life support skills for an adult, infant and child.
  2. Integrate a primary and secondary survey to help organize Code management.
  3. Identify and treat lethal dysrhythmias with Advanced Cardiac Life Support rationale.
  4. Indicate proper respiratory adjuncts for respiratory distress situations.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and application of emergency equipment; defibrillation, cardioversion, pacing, intubation and AED equipment.

Prerequisites

  1. Participants are expected to be familiar with the AHA Textbook of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. These materials are provided upon registration.
  2. Familiarity with resuscitation equipment.
  3. Knowledge in ECG interpretation.

Course Format Options

  • Option 1: Traditional classroom setting; incorporates the new Watch While Practice (WWP) DVD format of the American Heart Association. This format is available on both the Wednesday and Saturday classes. See a further description below.
  • Option 2: The AHA on-line HeartCode™ ACLS program. The student completes the on-line program, then attends a skill verification to generate the AHA ACLS card.  This format is available only during our Saturday classes. See a further description below.

Wednesday Shockingly Better™ ACLS/BLS

These weekday classes are limited to four students per class, providing the participant with an outstanding student/teacher ratio and an excellent opportunity for individual attention to assist with specific needs. Class starts with a continental breakfast and moves into the new AHA WWP format of teaching. The class offers a 1:1 student to manikin ratio for optimal use of the student's time and efficient practice of skills. Participants can look forward to utilizing clean, state of the art equipment. Students can also generate an American Heart Association BLS card during the Wednesday classes. Students wishing to generate a BLS card must complete the web based BLS course in advance of class and print out the course completion certificate. To access the BLS web site, click here .

Saturday Shockingly Better™ ACLS/BLS:

These weekend classes range from 3 to 12 students. Class starts with a continental breakfast and moves into the new AHA WWP format of teaching. We offer a student to manikin ratio of no more that 2:1 for optimal use of the participants’ time and the practice of skills. Saturday classes offer the traditional format or skills verification in conjunction with the HeartCode™ ACLS program. Participants choose which format they want when they register for the course. Students can look forward to using clean, state of the art equipment while taking the course. A working lunch is provided if the course goes beyond 12:00PM.

About the American Heart Association HeartCode™ ACLS course

The web based course is not for everyone!. It can take anywhere from 4 to 10 hours to complete the course, take the exam and print out the course completion certificate. The program is not MAC compatible. Support for the program is provided by the AHA and is limited to normal business hours. Some students love it, some do not. The participant will complete 10 course scenarios and take the written exam. A certificate of completion is then generated and presented at the skill verification course. CME/CE/CEH credits are offered for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists and EMTs/paramedics  Students can look forward to using clean, state of the art equipment.
